Wormhole anatomy

Much can be known about a wormhole's destination

and mass transit capability simply by observing its colours and shapes.

  • Wormholes consist of two main parts, an eye (or core) and flare (or aurora).

  • For consistency the Eve Geological Survey uses eye and flare.

  • The eye divides into an inner eye, outer eye, and attenuation zone.

  • The inner eye, often called the skybox, reflects the destination system.

  • The outer eye can reflect a mix of the destination and current system.

  • The outer eye attenuation zone reflects the observer's current system.

  • For some classes the skybox is detailed, others it is blurred or opaque.

  • Clouds are in the skybox and do not refer to the flare.

  • The colour of the flare informs about mass transit potential.

Flare colours: an expression of mass tolerance

There are four varieties of flare colour, and these identify how much mass (not volume) can transit through a wormhole at any one time.

Dark (royal) blue permits small ships

Light (cyan/teal) blue permits medium ships and smaller

Grey white permits large ships and smaller

Gold yellow permits extra large ships and smaller

The exact mass allowed (t and kg) permitted through each flare colour wormhole varies, check the individual wormhole data below for precise details.

Flare length, width, and behavior can vary wildly but has no practical applications.

Wormholes to Empire controlled systems

The skybox inner eye and outer eye will be a distinct colour if the destination leads to empire controlled K space.

The colour depends on the controlling empire at the destination system, golden yellow is Amarr, blue is Caldari, green is Gallente, rust red is Minmatar.

Wormholes to J space

When a wormhole leads to J space, each J space class (C1 to C6) can be identified before jumping by the features and colours in the skybox inner eye.

  • C1 and C2 are hard to distingish, buts they also posses similar system traits and risks. The brownish tinge and clear focused black cloud marks the C2.

  • C6 can easily be mistaken for a Pochven or K space Minmatar Empire skybox, but with practice is easy to tell apart.

The most salient identy markers for each class are desribed below.

K162 - The exit markers

A wormhole signature of K162 simply identifies the 'exit' side of a wormhole, produced by a pilot passing through, it is not a wormhole type itself.

The 'true' type of the wormhole can be identified via two methods:

By jumping through the K162 wormhole and inspecting the true wormhole data from the far side;

By inspecting the eye/core and the flare/aurora colours of the wormhole on the K162 side.

The K162 wormhole can therefore lead to a wide variety of destinations, though  it remains bound by the connection rules in the astral chart above.

Importance of background

To aid in visual identification of the wormhole species the background help or hinders.

These are two images of the same wormhole, M267, one with a dark backdrop the other with a light backdrop.

Note the grey flares, indicating a large mass transit is possible, and the dark red dot in the skybox, which is the distinctive marker for jumps to C3 systems.

There is not a right or wrong background to choose, but because the outer eye and transition zone reflect the current system,

this can sometimes be both pretty and a distraction from correct identification. Positioning for maximum colour contrasts is sage practice.

A 360° swivel usually helps choose the easiest backdrop.

and also a rather silly Winnie the Pooh type human who loves space and really cool rocks.
